The city purchased the building in 1931 and it was known for decades thereafter as the Austin Recreation Center. It was Austin's first -- all together, now -- recreation center.
(One source reported that it was the Austin Athletic Club from 1931 to 1971, but that leaves me clueless on its name from 1926 to 1931, and confused about why the sign out front still read "Austin Recreation Center" to its final day. Therefore, I rebuke said source until I see documentation.)
